As such, it helps us learn music faster and become better guitarists.<\/p>\n<p>We can become more expressive players by mastering the full range of volume, from very quiet to very loud.<\/p>\n<p>And this means we can share better music and enjoy practice more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"centerc\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TaEO5quZib4?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;autohide=1\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">A Common Scenario<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s face it: sometimes we sound better in the practice room than when we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/better-at-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">play guitar for other people<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It may be only our loved ones, the cat, or our teacher. But somehow all the subtle phrasing and expression evaporates when someone is listening.<\/p>\n<h3>Why do we sound better alone?<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s possible that we are not listening as closely when we are alone as when we are with other people. Our minds can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/getting-in-the-zone-flow-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wander<\/a> in practice without our noticing.<\/p>\n<p>Once we feel a little pressure, our senses become more alert and we hear ourselves more clearly. Chances are, we sound very much like we do alone, especially on the first run-through of a piece.<\/p>\n<p>Of course we also have the fear-factor. Performing can make us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/stage-fright\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nervous<\/a>. Our muscles tighten and our breath becomes more shallow. And all that completely changes how we play.<\/p>\n<p>So how can we practice so that we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/musical-expression-guitar-phrasing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">play expressively<\/a> and securely in front of people?<\/p>\n<p>One tool we can use in the practice-room is exaggeration.<\/p>\n<p>Exaggerating makes practice more effective<\/p>\n<p>When we exaggerate our dynamics and phrasing, we gain concrete benefits.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Decision: A Musical Force<\/h2>\n<p>First, we force ourselves to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/decide-musical-phrasing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">musical decisions<\/a>. To exaggerate a swell or fade, or an accent, we have to decide where and when.<\/p>\n<p>While there are best-practices, the most important part is that we make the decisions. Even if we\u2019re not sure it\u2019s the best idea. Something is better than nothing. We can go back and change it later if we want to.<\/p>\n<p>As an example, our inner talk may be, \u201c I\u2019ll get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/3-levels-sound-dynamics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">louder<\/a> here. I\u2019ll get quieter here. This chord will be really loud. This part will be exactly like this other similar part\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As we learn our music, we can make the decisions and write them (in pencil) on our sheet music.<\/p>\n<p>Then when we practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/four-elements-of-music\/\">we can exaggerate each element<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If it is to be quiet, we can make it ridiculously quiet. If we mean to crescendo (get louder), we swell like a tidal wave. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/muting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Staccato<\/a>, as staccato as staccato can be. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/legato-guitar-synchronize-the-hands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Legato<\/a>, as legato as legato can be.<\/p>\n<p>We are not looking for good musicality or subtle shading. We are striving for ridiculous, gross, gaudy exaggeration.<\/p>\n<p>We want to exaggerate to the point of clownishness.<\/p>\n<p>This is not how we will perform it later in front of people, or when we are playing \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/practice-vs-playing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">for real<\/a>&#8220;. This is how we practice. It\u2019s just a powerful practice technique.<\/p>\n<h3>The reason is this:<\/h3>\n<p>When we practice to exaggerate our decisions, it implies that we have actually made decisions.<\/p>\n<p>It is not enough to simply play the notes. Good music does not play itself. We need to make good decisions, and make them for good reasons. Forcing ourselves to exaggerate also forces us to examine our decisions.<\/p>\n<p>When we practice this way, everything may seem more difficult. This is because exaggeration takes more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/curiosity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mental power<\/a> and physical control.<\/p>\n<p>As we challenge our technical skills, we become better musicians and guitarists.<\/p>\n<p>Our practice is now guided by musical demands. We engage more. We\u2019re invited to focus deeper and slow down.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty soon, we can change volume or tone \u201con a dime\u201d. We have a larger number of musical options, and the ability to execute them.<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps most importantly, we begin to listen differently. We start to notice little opportunities for expression that we used to miss.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Performing on Classical Guitar<\/h2>\n<p>When we do perform in front of people, we can assume that we\u2019ll still have a bit of the issues described above. We\u2019ll still have anxiety. We\u2019ll still be hyper-present and may hear more than we normally do (which can be distracting).<\/p>\n<p>But if we\u2019ve been exaggerating in our practice, then we\u2019ll include our musical decisions.<\/p>\n<p>When we \u2019re performing at full tempo in front of people, all these choices will compress. They will \u201cbland out\u201d just a little bit. We won\u2019t swell or fade to as large an extent.<\/p>\n<p>This happens even if we don\u2019t exaggerate in practice. Most of us don\u2019t play with as much expression in front of people as we do in the practice room. If we have been practicing subtle volume or tone changes, etc., our listeners may not notice.<\/p>\n<p>But when we exaggerate in practice, they will more likely come through under pressure. Listeners will be more apt to hear the music like we do. (We can test ourselves using video.)<\/p>\n<p>If we want to hit a mark and we have any sort of resistance, the only way to hit that mark is to overshoot. It\u2019s like golfing in the wind. Or piloting a plane. If we want to hit any target from a distance, we must aim higher. This is true in music as well.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">More Perks of Exaggeration Practice<\/h2>\n<p>We may also find that we explore music more deeply when using exaggeration. We may discover new emotional content. We may imagine new visual imagery.<\/p>\n<p>We can also exaggerate in technique practice. We can play our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/why-practice-scales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scales<\/a> with severe crescendos and decrescendos, staccatos and legatos. We can play our <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/how-to-learn-classical-guitar-arpeggios-right-hand-technique\/\">arpeggios<\/a> with exaggerated rhythms and accents.<\/p>\n<p>This makes us better players. We connect more with listeners. We develop skills faster. And it\u2019s fun!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Here\u2019s how to get started:<\/h2>\n<p>-Pick up your guitar, and choose a few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/how-to-learn-classical-guitar-pieces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">notes<\/a> of whatever you\u2019re working on.<\/p>\n<p>-Decide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/dynamics-phrasing-classical-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dynamics<\/a> (get louder or quieter). Remember, anything goes. Play it a few times exaggerating these dynamics.<br \/>\n(Tip: the guitar can only go so loud, but the quiet side is ripe for experimentation.)<\/p>\n<p>-Each time you play the passage, make it even more exaggerated. Then even more. Notice how you feel.
