\u201cIf you do not change direction, you might end up where you are heading.\u201d <\/em><\/p> Lao Tzu<\/em> <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

As\nchildren, learning is easy. It\u2019s the most natural thing in the\nworld. It\u2019s what we do without thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\ntry, and inevitably make mistakes. We fall, we get up. We do things,\nthen notice the outcomes or responses we get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We keep what works and change what doesn\u2019t. Life is a grand experiment<\/a>. Not because we try to make it one, but because it\u2019s the only way we know to live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around\nthe age of five, we create our self-identity. At this point, we\nconcretize some things. We decide what we like or don\u2019t like. We\nmake decisions not just based on outcome, but also based on our ideas\nof ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And\nthis continues and increases as we age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s been suggested<\/a> that we make 90% of our mistakes in the first 10% of any endeavor. Be it learning guitar or growing up, our mistakes are heavily weighted to the front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what happens if we never go back and reassess<\/a>? Any mistake or bad habit we don\u2019t catch immediately will remain long after it needs to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nway we get what we want as children may not be ideal at age 30, 60 or\n90. But if we never change it, we\u2019ll continue to operate as\nchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a beginning<\/a> guitarist, we can\u2019t know what constitutes \u201cappropriate\u201d tension. We don\u2019t have the muscular awareness. We may not understand how the hands and wrists<\/a> work best. So our positioning may be non-optimal, and even harmful over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we progress, we will naturally make fewer mistakes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But\njust because we make fewer mistakes, doesn\u2019t mean that we don\u2019t\ncontinue to make unnecessary ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At all times, we can keep an open mind about our playing and habits. We can continue to explore ways to improve the basics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If\nwe fail to evolve, we will, at the least, fall short of our\npotential. And we may, without meaning to, bring ourselves pain or\ninjury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is always room to revisit the fundamentals<\/a>. We can always rechart our path and make changes for the better.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
