Recognize it, admit it, learn from it, forget it.\u201d <\/em><\/p><cite> <em>Dean Smith<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Many\nplayers, when first learning to read music, find it very challenging.\nThis is normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning\nto play from musical notation takes time and work. With each\npractice, we fail over and over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is true for many elements of learning guitar. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/sight-reading-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">sight-reading<\/a> music notation seems to bring out the emotions in many people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For others, it\u2019s the small <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/no-mistakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">mistakes<\/a> that show up in pieces we \u201cshould be able to play by now\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ntrick, as legendary coach Dean Smith says, is to suck the marrow from\nthe mistake, then move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognize\nit: Pay enough attention to recognize mistakes when they happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Admit\nit: Mistakes are part of the game. No need to deny mistakes or get\noffended. We\u2019re not bad people &#8211; we simply messed up. And after\nall, a mistake is useful when we\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn from it: Seek insight into what went wrong. Was it too <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/dangers-speed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">fast<\/a>? Is there confusion about something? Were we distracted? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/curiosity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Questions<\/a> lead to answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forget it: Tomorrow we\u2019ll have new mistakes to deal with. There\u2019s no need to carry the current one with us. We can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/reality-guilt-inner-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">release<\/a> it, re-fluff our feathers, and move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning\nguitar is a long-term relationship. Each day for (hopefully) decades\nwe\u2019ll sit down to work and practice.
