We decide (without realizing it) to be happy only in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We say to ourselves, \u201cWhen I can play this big piece of music, then I\u2019ll enjoy playing guitar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, \u201cWhen I get to the next level in my studies, then I\u2019ll be able to feel good about my practice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We create ideas of \u201csuccess\u201d, then bring ourselves pain when our <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/quote-eckhart-tolle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">realities<\/a> don\u2019t match them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a recipe for suffering and dismay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Because the feelings of accomplishment of a goal attained last only a moment. Then we start looking for a new, bigger, better idea of success. And the cycle continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goals are useful, and we should look forward to playing our favorite pieces of music one day (or mastering in the current lesson, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the real payoff of a musical practice is the daily experience. We get deep pleasure and enjoyment from asking the \u201cHow\u201d, and \u201cWhat happens if\u2026\u201d questions (then seeking the answers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guitar practice is at its best when we put all thoughts of the future from our minds. We instead make the goal to achieve the small challenges we set for ourself today. Then we bring our full awareness and attention to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/fine-details-classical-guitar-polish-perfect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">fine details<\/a> of our work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we start to feel \u201chopeless\u201d, or that we\u2019re \u201cjust not getting it\u201d, this is a helpful alarm. This tells us we\u2019re off-center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Problems are inevitable. There will always be something difficult with which we struggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the problem is not the problem &#8211; the problem is how we\u2019re thinking about the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get the most from every day of practice (even the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/short-guitar-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">short practices<\/a>), we\u2019ve only to bring our full attention to meeting small challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From these humble pursuits spring the peace, reward and joy of a life of music.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday Quotes are short explorations of music, life, and the daily endeavor of practicing classical guitar.
