Enjoy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;<em>Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.\u201d <\/em><\/p><cite> <em>Mother Teresa<\/em> <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For some reason, it can be easier to speak kind words to others than it is to speak them to ourselves. All too often, we bark commands or scold ourselves without mercy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Master film-maker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/kenburns\/\">Ken Burns<\/a> has three reminders for himself and his family:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c<\/em><em>This will pass. Get help from others. Be kind to yourself.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And he is quick to admit that the third is the toughest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the lifelong project of guitar, there will be challenges. We work at the edge of our ability as a matter of course. Trial &#8211; failure &#8211; adjustment. These form a perpetual cycle that leads to learning and progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And for most of us, life has a way of filling our schedules and shouldering guitar practice to the side. It takes diligence and creativity to keep a practice going. Sometimes, we\u2019re forced to take a break, whether we like it or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So it matters what we say to ourselves when we don\u2019t succeed. What we say in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/guitar-injuries-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">hard times<\/a> affects how long those hard times last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we use kind words and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/quiet-inner-dialog-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">language<\/a> to ourselves, we stay more engaged and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/curiosity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">curious<\/a>. We feel motivated. We experiment more confidently. We\u2019re more likely to take new risks and brave new territories. And we\u2019re able to keep working at new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/sight-reading-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">skills<\/a>, even if we don\u2019t see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/beginner-progress-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">results<\/a> yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guitar is something we do for fun, intellectual stimulation, and physical challenge. It\u2019s not \u201cnecessary\u201d &#8211; it\u2019s a bonus in life. As such, we can keep it lighthearted. Serious, yes.
