In cultures around the globe, the steady foot-tap is not the measure of good music. Many styles of music have more complex rhythms than our basic steady rhythms and integrate other types of note groupings like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/triplets\/\">triplets.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how do we count and play these rhythms? First, we need to know all about Mixed Meter, and mixed time signatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"centerc\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mbRrSEsuO28?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;autohide=1\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-mixed-meter-in-music\">What is Mixed Meter in Music?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most pieces of music, especially at the earlier levels, are in one time signature. This means that each measure (bar) of music has the same number of beats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mixed meter, on the other hand, allows for different bars to have different numbers of beats. And it is this: the underlying small notes remain steady. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that an eighth note has the same duration in one bar as it does in the next. Only the number of them per bar changes. And the next bar of 3\/4 will have 6 eighth notes. But the timing of those eighths will remain constant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-count-in-mixed-meter-in-musical-notation\">How to Count in Mixed Meter in Musical Notation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To count aloud in mixed meter, we must first know how to count each of the given time signatures separately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, we may count a measure of 4\/4 thus: <br><strong>1-and\u20132-and\u20133-and\u20134-and\u2026.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a measure of 6\/8 thus: <br><strong>1\u20132\u20133\u20134\u20135\u20136\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once we can count all the given time signatures, we need to keep the small subdivisions steady. As long as the small notes stay steady, we can count from bar one to the next. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like this: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1-and\u20132-and\u20133-and\u20134-and|1\u20132\u20133\u20134\u20135\u20136. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each count, number or word gets the same amount of time. Steady as a rock. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-keep-a-steady-beat\">Keep a Steady Beat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest mistakes people make counting mixed meter is stopping at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/cross-bar-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"bar lines (opens in a new tab)\">bar lines<\/a>. This creates a gap. This gap takes time, and make the rhythm wrong. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, the most important part is to keep a steady beat. As long as the underlying beat is steady, the music continues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another common mistake is to count the different bars at different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/dangers-speed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"speeds (opens in a new tab)\">speeds<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trick is to always keep the underlying beat steady. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tip-figure-it-out-without-the-guitar\">Tip: Figure It Out Without the Guitar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mixed meter rhythms can be quite complicated. It\u2019s a good general rule to clap and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/how-to-learn-classical-guitar-pieces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"count the rhythms (opens in a new tab)\">count the rhythms<\/a> first without the guitar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First we should understand and can count the rhythms reliably. Afterward, we can then bring in the guitar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like most of what we do on guitar, mixed meter is much easier go step by step through a process. In this case:\n1.
