{"id":59075,"date":"2019-09-06T08:00:03","date_gmt":"2019-09-06T15:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/?p=59075"},"modified":"2025-03-31T04:37:51","modified_gmt":"2025-03-31T11:37:51","slug":"creativity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/creativity\/","title":{"rendered":"Creativity in Classical Guitar Practice"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>How do we use creativity in classical guitar practice?\u00a0 Is creativity only for the jazz guys?\u00a0 The lead guitarists in the band?\u00a0 The composers?\u00a0 The improvisers?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Absolutely not.\u00a0 Below, we\u2019ll explore ways to be creative with our classical guitar.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"centerc\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KODLCht7NnA?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;autohide=1\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-classical-guitar-is-different-than-other-styles\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Classical Guitar is Different from Other Styles<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Guitar is the most popular instrument in the world. More people play it than any other (unless we count the voice as an instrument).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>For this reason, we find guitars featuring in nearly every style and genre of music.\u00a0 (While the guitar is not a traditional orchestral instrument, we do have concertos written for orchestra and guitar soloist.)\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Most commonly, it&#8217;s used as an accompaniment. This means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/chords\/\">the guitar player strums or plucks chords<\/a>. The main focus of the music is sung lyrics, or another melodic instrument which plays the tune.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Guitar is also used in ensembles (groups). This could be as accompaniment or as the lead instrument.\u00a0 The \u201clead guitar\u201d player in a band will improvise melodies. These players choose the notes in the moment. There may be a structure (chords) to the song. But the actual notes will be different each time they play the tune.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Traditionally, classical guitar players rarely improvise. We have the notes printed on a page in front of us. The rhythm is there as well.\u00a0 We\u2019re told when to play loud or soft, warm or tinny-sounding.\u00a0 Many times, we\u2019re also told which finger to use.\u00a0 In short, we have detailed instructions on every little movement.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>So where does creativity come into play in this? With everything decided beforehand, how do we nurture our creativity as classical guitarists?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In fact, we are creative on classical guitar in (at least) three main ways.\u00a0 (Below, we call them \u201czones\u201d, just to be creative.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-classical-guitar-creative-zone-1-solving-problems\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Classical Guitar Creative Zone #1: Solving Problems<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Classical guitar can be extremely challenging. Even if we have the technical skill, many musical passages (lines) in pieces can be hard to play well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/polish-guitar-music-troubleshoot-tricky-spots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Tricky spots (opens in a new tab)\">Tricky spots<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/guitar-shifting-positions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"shifts (opens in a new tab)\">shifts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/classical-guitar-speed-bursts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"fast scales (opens in a new tab)\">fast scales<\/a> &#8211; all these can create problems. And we can use our creativity to <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/guitar-practice-schedule\/\">solve these problems<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In fact, much of what we do is <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/25-guitar-practice-tips\/\">learning how to practice and solve problems<\/a>. Different problems may call for different and original strategies. Working through these strategies takes creativity.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>For instance, should we use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/slow-practice-classical-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"slow practice (opens in a new tab)\">slow practice<\/a>? Change <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/speed-dotted-rhythms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"the rhythm (opens in a new tab)\">the rhythm<\/a>? Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/accents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"accents (opens in a new tab)\">accents<\/a>? We have dozens of strategies available. And each little problem may take a unique combination of solutions.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-classical-guitar-creative-zone-2-musical-expression\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Classical Guitar Creative Zone #2: Musical Expression<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Even though the composer may tell us \u201cloud\u201d or \u201cquiet\u201d, we still need to make the music believable. Unless the music creates an emotional response, we may not be doing our job.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Just as actors have their lines and instructions, we have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/longline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"breathe life (opens in a new tab)\">breathe life<\/a> into our music. They have characters and roles to animate. We have notes to animate. The job is the same.\u00a0 To make it believable.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/musical-expression-guitar-phrasing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"play expressively (opens in a new tab)\">play expressively<\/a>, we often have to get creative. If we\u2019re told to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/dynamics-phrasing-classical-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"get louder here (opens in a new tab)\">get louder here<\/a>\u201d, we have to decide how loud and at what rate. Is it linear, with each note steadily louder than the previous one? Or is it exponential, getting much louder at the end?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This depends on the effect we\u2019re aiming for. The more creative we become, the more we can experiment and exaggerate.\u00a0 (More on this below.) This helps us find more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/fine-details-classical-guitar-polish-perfect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"details and opportunities (opens in a new tab)\">details and opportunities<\/a> to bring our music to life.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-classical-guitar-creative-zone-3-curation\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Classical Guitar Creative Zone #3: Curation<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We can also exercise our creativity through curation. We choose what music to play and in what order. In this way, we create an experience.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Museums decide which paintings to hang on a wall and in what order. Likewise, we choose our music. We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/classical-guitar-repertoire-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"create sets (opens in a new tab)\">create sets<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/how-to-maintain-classical-guitar-repertoire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"programs (opens in a new tab)\">programs<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>And we can do this even if we only have a few pieces we\u2019re comfortable playing. For instance, we choose the order.\u00a0 We decide what to include and what to leave out.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We may make these choices by finding creative similarities between tunes.\u00a0 We can contrast and compare styles or musical periods.\u00a0 Or we can contrast composers, moods, or themes (like love, conflict or transformation).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We\u2019re limited only by our creativity.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-the-more-creativity-the-better\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">The More Creativity the Better<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Classical guitar has a wealth of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/tq-kourosh-dini-creativity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"creative constraints (opens in a new tab)\">creative constraints<\/a>. Many of the elements are already chosen for us.\u00a0 But we can still<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/balance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> keep an engaged and experimental mindset<\/a>. The more we try new things, <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/guitar-practice-reflection-journaling\">the more we discover<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>And because of this, we can put our full creativity into the remaining areas.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-action-tip-how-to-get-started-being-more-creative-on-classical-guitar\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Action Tip: How to Start Being More Creative in Classical Guitar Practice<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We can bring loads more creativity and exploration to our daily <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/5ingredients\/\">practice<\/a>. A great way to start, is through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/exaggeration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"exaggeration (opens in a new tab)\">exaggeration<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>For example, when we practice, we can wildly exaggerate swells and fades in volume <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/dynamics-phrasing-classical-guitar\/\">(dynamics)<\/a>.\u00a0 We can try to reduce the soft parts until they&#8217;re barely audible.\u00a0 And push the loud parts as far as we can.<\/p>\r\n<p>We can also exaggerate our body language.\u00a0 Appropriate head, hand and arm gestures can bring more musicality to both practice and performance.\u00a0 It increases our expressiveness, and enhances our communication to an audience.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Here are some other ways we can use exaggeration to increase creativity in our practice:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Speed (tempo)\u00a0&#8211; Experiment with drastically slower or faster passages than traditional interpretations<\/li>\r\n<li>Links between notes (articulation) &#8211; Exaggerate staccatos to be extremely short or make the notes as connected as sweeping as possible (legato).\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/slurs\/\">Slur<\/a> notes you wouldn&#8217;t normally slur!<\/li>\r\n<li>Rhythm &#8211; Play with <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/rubato-video\/\">rubato<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/accents\/\">agogic accents<\/a> to discover new <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/decide-musical-phrasing\/\">phrasing<\/a> possibilities<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/classical-guitar-tone\/\">Tone changes<\/a> &#8211; Explore tone colour by moving the plucking hand to the extreme left or right of the sound hole<\/li>\r\n<li>Silence &#8211; Extend pauses between phrases longer than feels comfortable<\/li>\r\n<li>Non-traditional techniques &#8211; Incorporate percussive elements, play the tune entirely in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FSWgw_t4kjE\">harmonics<\/a>, or explore unusual guitar techniques<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>This is great fun, and it also improves our technical and musical abilities.\u00a0 It can lead to unique interpretive choices that might never emerge if we always play conservatively.\u00a0 We wouldn&#8217;t use these extremes in a performance.\u00a0 But we can use them in our practice to discover creative possibilities that we can mould or refine to enhance our musicality.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Creative exaggeration can bring more enjoyment, satisfaction and beauty to everything we play.<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do we use creativity in classical guitar practice?\u00a0 Is creativity only for the jazz guys?\u00a0 The lead guitarists in the band?\u00a0 The composers?\u00a0 The improvisers?
