When we get the basic gist (i.e. the notes) we falsely believe there\u2019s nothing more to see. So we hop to the next piece of music or exercise. Over time we choose more and more complex pieces and exercises.<\/p>\n<p>The outcome is that we find ourselves playing complex pieces in a mediocre way. We know that something is missing, but don\u2019t know what it is. So we charge ahead with the next piece. We\u2019re sure that things will work themselves out and one day we\u2019ll play beautifully.<\/p>\n<p>But if we recognize and drill the fundamentals, we get better results.<\/p>\n<p>One simple scale is all we need to practice smoothly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/legato-guitar-synchronize-the-hands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">connecting<\/a> notes. A few simple right-hand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/how-to-learn-classical-guitar-arpeggios-right-hand-technique\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">patterns<\/a> can prepare us for every other pattern we\u2019ll likely encounter in music.<\/p>\n<p>The top 1% of 1% of 1% go deep with a few simple exercises. It\u2019s the amateurs busying themselves with endless new distractions.<\/p>\n<p>This is why Bruce Lee famously said \u201cI fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And this is why legendary strength coach Charles Paloquin said \u201cThe basics are the basics, and you can\u2019t beat the basics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Depth beats breadth.<\/p>\n<p>When we ask less \u201cwhat\u201d and more \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/alternation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how<\/a>\u201d, we build skills faster and enjoy practice more.
