On the surface, they imply something. But unless we\u2019re familiar with the \u201cscene\u201d we may not understand the nuances.<\/p>\n<p>Among these are the terms \u201cclassical\u201d and \u201cfingerstyle\u201d. \u201cFingerpicking\u201d could also fit. So let\u2019s explore these terms and to what (in general) they refer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"centerc\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Uzo-tnZ5oEs?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;autohide=1\" width=\"\u201c700&quot;\" height=\"\u201c393&quot;\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">What is Fingerstyle Guitar<\/h2>\n<p>If we look at the word \u201cfingerstyle\u201d, it means that we pluck the strings with our fingers, instead of a pick (plectrum).\u00a0 We can use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/classical-on-acoustic\/\">classical or acoustic guitar for fingerstyle playing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By this definition, classical guitar is included within \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/fingerstyle-for-beginners\">fingerstyle<\/a>\u201d. But if we look closer we find other differences.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Common Traits of Fingerstyle Guitar<\/h3>\n<p>When we explore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/fingerpicking-pattern-outside-in\/\">fingerpicking style<\/a> and guitarists who play fingerstyle, we find certain traits.<\/p>\n<p>The traits below are sweeping generalizations, and outliers do exist. But stereotypes serve a use, and these are some for fingerstyle playing:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steel-string acoustic guitar &#8211;<\/strong> Most self-identified fingerstyle guitarists choose to <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/best-beginner-acoustic-guitar-buying-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">play on steel-string guitar<\/a>. You might have guitar players who play fingerstyle on electric guitar, but very rarely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alternate Tunings &#8211;<\/strong> Though not always, fingerstyle guitarists frequently use non-standard tunings, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/capo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">capos<\/a>. Combining fingerpicking patterns in the right hand (picking hand) with open-strings as drones (notes that constantly overring) can give the music a full, rich texture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melody\/accompaniment &#8211;<\/strong> Many fingerstyle guitarists choose to play a vocal-like melody, with accompaniment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/musical-form\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Song-forms<\/a> usually hold to verse-chorus patterns, much like pop songs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Music self-composed or arranged &#8211;<\/strong> Most prominent fingerstyle guitarists tend to play their own compositions, mixed with arrangements of popular tunes. Players often prefer to play by ear or use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/classical-guitar-tab-vs-notation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TABs<\/a>, as opposed to musical notation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Self-Taught &#8211;<\/strong> Fingerstyle is most often self-taught. There is no consensus around what makes \u201cgood technique\u201d. Any hand position (for both the left and right hand), or use of the body is generally accepted. While some players do take acoustic guitar lessons with others who play fingerstyle, those teachers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/guitar-lessons-teacher-fails\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">likely self-taught<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Doug Young Also Said it Well\u2026<\/h3>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acousticguitarforum.com\/forums\/showthread.php?t=138635\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an online<\/a>\u00a0guitar forum, Doug Young wrote,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cThis is one of those confusing terms, where the word for a technique has come to mean a musical style. We have much the same situation with \u201dflatpicking\u201c where if you take it literally, then anyone who plays with a flat pick (rock players, jazz players, etc) would be flatpicking.<br \/>\nBut instead it usually means a specific style of music, that you sort of know when you hear it. \u201dFingerstyle\u201c usually means playing on a steel string guitar, and there\u2019s a tendency to use or at least accept altered tunings (by no means universal), and to play one\u2019s own compositions (again, not at all universal).<br \/>\nFingerstyle is often thought of as being influenced by folk music, pop music, and often gets labeled \u201dnew age\u201c because of some of the Windham Hill pioneers in \u201dfingerstyle\u201c.<br \/>\nTo make it more confusing, there are \u201dfingerpickers\u201c who vehemently resist the name \u201dfingerstyle\u201c, even tho they share a lot in common, tho \u201dfingerpickers\u201c usually fall more into the Chet Atkins camp, or country blues, or\u2026<br \/>\nAnd of course, you have &#8220;fingerstyle&#8221; players like Muriel Anderson, who mostly plays a classical guitar, and steel string players like Peppino d\u2019Agostino, and Peter Finger who sometimes play classical on a steel string. People often associate &#8220;classical guitar&#8221; with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/sm-spanish-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spanish Guitar Music<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Common Traits of Classical Guitar<\/h3>\n<p>Below are some common traits of classical guitar. There will be exceptions, but these traits hold true the large majority of the time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus on technique &#8211;<\/strong> While other styles may have other primary foci, those learning classical guitar spend consistent practice time on the \u201chow\u201d of playing, such as positioning the body of the guitar. Fine details of movement and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/how-to-hold-a-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">position<\/a> in both the left hand and right hand are common practice areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read music &#8211;<\/strong> Classical guitar is most commonly played using composed music written in standard musical notation. This is in contrast with improvised music or self-composed music. (Again, some classical guitarists also compose, but these are few.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals of music &#8211;<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/guitar-squeak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clean execution<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/3-levels-sound-dynamics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">premeditated phrasing<\/a> are common goals of classical players.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Polyphonic (multiple musical voices at once) &#8211;<\/strong> Classical guitar music often has melody, bass notes, and accompaniment. This creates rich textures and complex technical requirements, which is why it helps to\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Study with a teacher &#8211;<\/strong> Because of the focus on technique and musical literacy, classical guitarists often study with teachers who have in turn studied with teachers. These could be in-person guitar lessons, or via video or online program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nylon-stringed Instrument &#8211;<\/strong> Classical guitars (the instrument) usually use nylon strings for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd strings. The bass strings are nylon with a metal coating. Personal tastes are subjective.<\/p>\n<p>That said, when it comes to the physical act of playing solo guitar, <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/classical-guitar-benefits\/\">the classical guitar offers a straighter road to mastery<\/a>.
