\u201cA man cannot be comfortable without his own self-approval.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark Twain<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

One of the reasons we play music is to have a better life. We want to study and grow. We relish meaningful work.<\/p>\n

But even though we\u2019re in it for the right reasons, it can sometimes feel like we\u2019ve \u201cgotten behind\u201d.<\/p>\n

One of Eckhart Tolle\u2019s<\/a> definitions of \u2018stress\u2019 is thinking<\/a>, \u201cI should be doing something else.<\/strong>\u201d Here, stress stems from thinking what we\u2019re currently doing is wrong, or not enough.<\/p>\n

If we set expectations to practice two hours a day, and only get in one hour, we\u2019ve failed. When it takes \u201clonger than it should\u201d to learn something, we don\u2019t feel successful.<\/p>\n

And when we label our work \u201cfailure\u201d, it doesn\u2019t feel good.<\/p>\n

Twain observes that we need to approve of ourselves to be truly comfortable.<\/p>\n

This short, pithy phrase can be a powerful tool when we feel dishearted or frustrated with our music. We can explore where we \u201cdon\u2019t approve\u201d of ourselves. And when we find it, we can check for unrealistic expectations.<\/p>\n

We can lower the bar to success<\/a>, and enjoy more of it. We can define success as simply picking up the instrument and playing one note or chord.<\/p>\n

When we do, we build more momentum and enthusiasm. And these lead to better focus, faster learning, and a more rewarding musical life.<\/p>\n
