We\u2019re not aware of most of the things we\u2019re not aware of.<\/p>\n

We need a little knowledge about any subject before it becomes \u201cinteresting\u201d. And usually, the more we learn, the more interesting it becomes.<\/p>\n

Until we read that book about moss<\/a>, we don\u2019t even notice that we\u2019re surrounded by it. Until we grow our own geraniums, they\u2019re just another flower.<\/p>\n

Music, too, unfolds in layers.<\/p>\n

At first, we\u2019re happy just getting the notes.<\/p>\n

Then we marvel at the virtuoso\u2019s speed, and decide that maybe here is our next great quest.<\/p>\n

If we\u2019re lucky, we may learn some phrasing<\/a> concepts and start to make real music.<\/p>\n

As we progress, we learn to listen in new ways. Our tastes change and we become more discerning.<\/p>\n

In time, as we hone our craft and our \u201cwits grow sharper\u201d, as Mr. Phillpotts put it, we learn to conjure the magic that once seemed impossible.<\/p>\n

We evolve as musicians. It\u2019s as if we stand on a hillside while a deep fog lifts, revealing first shapes, then outlines, then finer and finer details.<\/p>\n

And for our part, we need only stay there and strain our eyes, looking for patterns, staying alert and curious as new worlds come into focus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
