{"id":2347,"date":"2015-03-20T17:47:51","date_gmt":"2015-03-21T00:47:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/classicalguitarshed.foureyes.com\/?p=2347"},"modified":"2024-07-22T23:25:40","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T06:25:40","slug":"classical-guitar-phrasing-note-pairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/classical-guitar-phrasing-note-pairs\/","title":{"rendered":"Classical Guitar Phrasing Lesson: Note Pairs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In our quest to play classical guitar as beautifully as possible, we encounter all sorts of tricks, tendencies, classical guitar phrasing rules, and best practices. \u00a0If we can learn to recognize them, and take advantage of them consistently, amazing things happen.<\/p>\n<p>This article explores one such opportunity that you can find in almost every piece of music you play. \u00a0It&#8217;s one of the many brilliant lessons I have learned from my musical coach, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.markwestcottpianist.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Westcott<\/a>\u00a0(who explains these things much better than I do).<\/p>\n<p>Heads up: \u00a0This lesson, while not really &#8220;advanced&#8221;, goes a little deeper than some players may have delved. \u00a0It assumes you are willing to look closely at <strong>how<\/strong> you are playing each note. \u00a0If this is new to you, congratulations! \u00a0You have found the way forward.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Cultural Patterns and Behaviors\u00a0of Everyday Life<\/h2>\n<p>In everyday life there are situations that happen all the time.\u00a0 And as we grow up and learn how to function, we figure out the best way to navigate these situations.\u00a0 These are things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Interacting with the clerk at a store when we buy something<\/li>\n<li>Passing someone walking on the street<\/li>\n<li>Encountering an old friend<\/li>\n<li>Meetings at work or in groups<\/li>\n<li>Coming home and greeting our family, friend, neighbor, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We learn over time the best way to handle these different situations. And do it pretty much the same way every time. We know what works, and we know what doesn&#8217;t work. For instance, we typically don&#8217;t hug the store clerk, nor do we pat the backsides of strangers in the street (if you do these things, you may want to explore counseling options&#8230;..)<\/p>\n<h2>Likewise, Patterns and Behaviors in Music<\/h2>\n<p>In music, we also encounter situations that occur frequently. If we can begin to recognize these situations, and find ways to use them to our advantage, everything that we play will sound more structured, more organized, easier to understand, and generally more beautiful.\u00a0 Some things just sound \u201cright\u201d, and if we learn what they are, we are on the right track.<\/p>\n<p>The situation I&#8217;d like to discuss here is that of <strong>pairs of notes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Pairs of notes happen\u00a0all over the place. There are several examples to come.<\/p>\n<p>Before talking about how to handle them, let&#8217;s first review our overriding goal\u00a0which should inform all of our musical decisions.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Remembering the Goal of Music<\/h2>\n<p>The main goal for our music is to create an emotionally satisfying experience for our listener. Everything else we do is in service to this main goal (or should be).<\/p>\n<p>To create an emotional experience that lasts through and is developed by the entire piece of music, we have to create what some call the &#8220;<a title=\"The Long Line: lessons from a pianist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/longline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">long line<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(Soapbox Warning!: \u00a0Some people like to talk about playing with \u201cpassion\u201d and \u201cfeeling\u201d.\u00a0 While this is a very romantic notion, in reality, we need to know what we are actually doing.\u00a0 Otherwise, we have no real plan and\u00a0we are just emoting and\u00a0hoping for the best. \u00a0This often comes across in the same way that does bad acting. \u00a0At any rate, passion and feeling are for the listener, not necessarily for the player.\u00a0 It\u2019s the player\u2019s job to make the listener feel something.\u00a0 If we feel things, great! But it\u00a0shouldn\u2019t be a prerequisite of good playing.\u00a0 What if you have bad clams before a performance?\u00a0 What then? \u00a0Eh? \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stanislavski%27s_system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stanislavski<\/a> can\u2019t teach you to dance. \u00a0There is simply no substitute for craft.\u00a0 End soapbox.)<\/h5>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">The Long Line<\/h2>\n<p>Creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/longline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">long line<\/a> means that we want the action to continue.\u00a0 We want to make choices that keep the action moving.\u00a0 And we want to make choices that minimize the number of stops and restarts.\u00a0 We want to maintain the energy and forward thrust of the piece.<\/p>\n<p>We do this through the way that we use:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/3-levels-sound-dynamics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dynamics<\/strong><\/a> (louds and softs, swells and fades).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Articulations<\/strong>. This is how we actually play each note (short, long, accented, hammer-ons and pull-offs, and many other devices).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rubato<\/strong> (speeding up and slowing down)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Our knowledge<\/strong> of which notes lead to which other notes, and our intention to bring them there (like in speech, the point we are making). \u00a0This is at the heart of classical guitar phrasing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"centerc\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A9HmIzy700U?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;autohide=1\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Classical Guitar Phrasing: \u00a0Pairs of Notes<\/h2>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs-example1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2366 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs-example1-300x149.jpg\" alt=\"note-pairs-example\" width=\"300\" height=\"149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs-example1-300x149.jpg 300w, https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs-example1.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>It is very common in music to encounter two short notes leading to a longer note.<\/p>\n<p>This could be 2 eighth notes leading to a quarter or half note. It could also be to quarter notes leading to a longer note. It could be 2 half\u00a0notes leading to a whole note.<\/p>\n<p>The important thing to notice and learn to recognize is the pair of notes that lead to longer notes.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Knowing What Goes Where: Intention and Direction<\/h2>\n<p>Ideally, all notes go forward, leading ahead to the next musical idea.\u00a0 In practice, we need to be a bit more specific than that.<\/p>\n<p>Not all notes are created equal. When they are played equally, they may sound overly technical and devoid of beauty. (Just like when you speak in a monotone or completely steady rhythm it doesn&#8217;t sound natural.)<\/p>\n<p>Some notes lead to other notes, and some notes are the arrival points. Some notes have double duty, and serve both roles.\u00a0 Learning the difference between these, and how to communicate these relationships are one of the skills you need in order to consistently play beautifully and connect with listeners.\u00a0 It also makes studying music much more interesting\u00a0 (and practice much more challenging!)<\/p>\n<p>The way to learn what goes where is to learn to recognize tendencies (such as the note pairs we are talking about here).\u00a0 With time, you can learn to recognize these classical guitar phrasing patterns everywhere and take advantage of the opportunities they hold.<\/p>\n<h2>What to Actually Do: \u00a0How to Play Note Pairs<\/h2>\n<p>So how do we actually demonstrate the role of each note? How do we communicate what leads\u00a0where?<\/p>\n<p>What follows are three different classical guitar phrasing &#8220;rules&#8221;\u00a0to make this happen. Not all will work 100% of the time, but mastering all three together is a great place to start, and will make a huge difference in your overall sound.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Placement<\/h3>\n<p>While it seems like a rhythm is a rhythm is a rhythm, it&#8217;s actually not so straightforward as that.<\/p>\n<p>We are actually able to play notes on the &#8220;front&#8221;, of the beat, the &#8220;back&#8221; of the beat, or directly on the beat.<\/p>\n<p>Where we specifically place each note within the rhythm is called &#8220;placement&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Related to this, the way that we play notes and rhythms in relationship to the notes around it can be called &#8220;spacing&#8221;. \u00a0But this is just vocabulary. \u00a0What matters is:<\/p>\n<p>For pairs of notes,<\/p>\n<p>1.) The first note is played directly on the beat, and perfectly in\u00a0time.<\/p>\n<p>2.)\u00a0The second note is played on the &#8220;backside&#8221; of the beat, as late as the law allows. This means playing the second note as late as possible without changing the rhythm (or, in other words, the note value).<\/p>\n<h3>2. Accenting<\/h3>\n<p>We can also use the volume of each note to demonstrate our intentions about the role of the note.<\/p>\n<p>For pairs of notes,<\/p>\n<p>1.) The first note is played very quietly.<\/p>\n<p>2.) The second note is accented, or played more loudly.<\/p>\n<p>Note: you cannot always do it this way, but 99%\u00a0of the time\u00a0it works extremely well.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Separating the Two Notes<\/h3>\n<p>While not all music allows for this one, separating the two notes with a small rest is incredibly effective at demonstrating the forward motion of our musical intentions.<\/p>\n<p>In short, just stop the sound of the first before the second plays, setting the two notes apart.<\/p>\n<p>Between the two notes of a note pair, play the first note for roughly half the note duration, and then stop the sound with a rest. (For example, if you have to quarter notes, play the first as an eighth note plus an eighth note rest.)<\/p>\n<p>The main point is just to <strong>stop the first note<\/strong> before playing the second note. It doesn&#8217;t have to be so precise as all this.<\/p>\n<p>It is important <strong>not<\/strong> to play the first note staccato. Instead, play the full length of a shorter note, then a rest.\u00a0 If you are playing at faster speeds (tempos), or with smaller note values (like 16th notes)\u00a0it may end up staccato, and in that case it&#8217;s okay.<\/p>\n<h3>All Three Together<\/h3>\n<p>When possible all three of the methods above used together is the most powerful demonstration of what we are shooting for.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t always possible, because we have to balance other considerations in the context of the specific instance. \u00a0But certainly practice all three together, and use it as much as you can.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t know where it doesn&#8217;t work, error on the side of over-using this technique. \u00a0You will be &#8220;right&#8221; far more than you will be &#8220;wrong&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>What to do with the third note<\/h2>\n<p>For the arrival note, the third note, you can use the basic classical guitar phrasing rule of note-by-note dynamics:<\/p>\n<p>-If the third note is higher than the second note, play it quieter.<\/p>\n<p>-If the third note is lower than the second note, play it louder.<\/p>\n<p>There will be times when the opposite may be a better choice, but 90% of the time, this way will work best.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Musical Examples of Note\u00a0Pairs:<\/h2>\n<p>Let&#8217;s put on our safari hats and take a look at some note pairs in their natural habitats.<\/p>\n<h3>Two\u00a0Eighths leading to a quarter note<\/h3>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2349 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs2.jpg\" alt=\"note-pairs2\" width=\"400\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs2-300x131.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Perhaps most common, we frequently see 2 eighths leading to a quarter note in music.<\/p>\n<p>By making the second eighth louder than both the first and third notes of the measure, this song sound sounds light on it&#8217;s feet and spritely.<\/p>\n<h3>Two Eighths at the end of a bar<\/h3>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2348 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs1.jpg\" alt=\"note-pairs1\" width=\"400\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs1-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>The 2-eighth notes pattern can happen anywhere in the bar.<\/p>\n<h3>Two Eighths as pick-up notes<\/h3>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2351 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs4.jpg\" alt=\"note-pairs4\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs4.jpg 400w, https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs4-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>With pick up notes, we handle the two notes as we would anywhere else.<\/p>\n<p>To begin a piece, Play the first note as &#8220;its own man&#8221;. I often think the words &#8220;one for nothing&#8221; when playing the first note.<\/p>\n<p>For the second note, you can use the three techniques above as well as using the word &#8220;and&#8221; to lead the note forward toward the downbeat of the first measure.\u00a0 This should have you off and running.<\/p>\n<h3>Two Quarters leading to a half note in the bass<\/h3>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2352 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs5.jpg\" alt=\"note-pairs5\" width=\"400\" height=\"156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs5.jpg 400w, https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs5-300x117.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>The same general rules apply to the bass as they do to the melody line.<\/p>\n<h3>Related: Doubled notes as steady eighths<\/h3>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2355 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs6.jpg\" alt=\"classical guitar note pairs\" width=\"400\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs6.jpg 400w, https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs6-300x114.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>While this example and the next are not precisely what we are talking about here, the same rules work well.<\/p>\n<p>When we encounter doubled notes, we can think of them as note pairs as well. The roles stay the same as they do in isolated note pairs.<\/p>\n<p>Also note that there are dynamics (the <em>mf<\/em>\u00a0and the &#8220;ramps&#8221;) written under this one. \u00a0The crescendos and decrescendos (swells and fades) can still happen. \u00a0You can treat your note pairs as we are talking about here within the larger structure of the written dynamics.<\/p>\n<h3>Related: \u00a0Steady half notes in the bass: the upbeat<\/h3>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2350 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs3.jpg\" alt=\"note-pairs3\" width=\"400\" height=\"95\" srcset=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/note-pairs3-300x71.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Similar to above, repeated half notes in a bassline may be handled in the exact same way. The first half note is the downbeat, which is played directly in time (on the beat).<\/p>\n<p>The second half note is the &#8220;upbeat&#8221;, and can be accented (much of the time) and placed slightly late (as late as the law allows, anyway).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Challenge:<\/h2>\n<p>My challenge to you: choose any piece of music, and identify all the note pairs within it. Then choose at least one or two places to try this out.
