All about Agust\u00edn<\/strong> Barrios, Guitarist and Composer<\/h3>\n

Agust\u00edn Barrios Mangor\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0(5 May 1885 \u2013 7 August 1944) was a virtuoso guitarist and prolific composer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Early Musical Brilliance<\/h2>\n

Agust\u00edn Barrios was born in Villa Florida, Paraguay.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Right from the start, his parents nurtured his love of music and the arts.\u00a0 <\/span>But the young Barrios taught himself to play guitar. <\/span><\/p>\n

He played South American folk music until he started lessons with Gustavo Escalada.\u00a0 This opened his eyes to a whole new world, as Escalada introduced him to the works of <\/span>Francisco T\u00e1rrega, Sor and Aguado.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s clear that Barrios’ musical brilliance shone from a young age. At 15, he became the youngest university student in Paraguayan history. As well being talented in music, he loved maths, literature, and graphic art.\u00a0 He spoke Spanish and Guarani, and could read English, German and French.<\/span><\/p>\n

In early life, he made a living in theatres, playing incidental music for shows and silent films.\u00a0 Around this time, he became friends with the actor Paravicini who taught him makeup and costume.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nitsuga Mangor\u00e9<\/h2>\n

He used those theatrical skills later when he assumed an alter ego called Nitsuga Mangor<\/span>\u00e9.\u00a0 (Nitsuga is\u00a0<\/span>Agust\u00edn spelled backward.) Thereafter, he declared himself a Chief of the Guarani tribe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From 1930-34, he performed as Nitsuga Mangor<\/span>\u00e9. Billed as\u00a0the \u2018Paganini of the guitar from the jungles of Paraguay\u2019, he wore traditional dress. This was resplendent, with feathers and a bow and arrow.<\/span><\/p>\n

He felt mystically empowered to share the music of the forest with his audience.<\/span><\/p>\n
