Sir John Smith, His Almain<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t\n          <li><a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/sm-mudarra-fantasia\/\">Mudarra, Alonso &#8211; Fantasia<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t\n\t<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\t\n\t\n\t\n<\/div>\n\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Guitar Composers of the Renaissance<\/h2>\n<p>Many of those writing music for the guitar\u2019s forerunners remain anonymous. \u00a0But notable composers include Luis de Mil\u00e1n, Alonso Mudarra, and John Dowland.<\/p>\n<p>Luis de Mil\u00e1n, from Spain, was one of the most prominent vihuela composers of the Renaissance. His book \u201cEl Maestro\u201d is the earliest surviving music for the vihuela. \u00a0It represents a high point in the instrument\u2019s repertoire.<\/p>\n<p>His compatriot, Alonso Mudarra, also made significant contributions to the Vihuela repertoire. He wrote an influencial set of three books of music, known as \u201cTres libros de m\u00fasica en cifras para vihuela&#8221;. \u00a0They contain some of the earliest known pieces for the four-course guitar.<\/p>\n<p>In England, John Dowland became a leading lute virtuoso of his time. His intricate pieces and songs express a melancholic beauty.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Other Renaissance Composers<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, mainstream composers focused on choral music. \u00a0They, too, were having a significant influence on the development of music at that time.<\/p>\n<p>Singer Josquin des Prez was a central figure of the Franco-Flemish school. His compositions were vocal. And his mastery of technique and expressive depth had a profound influence on the music of his time.<\/p>\n<p>Italian composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina wrote sacred music. \u00a0His masses and motets are shining examples of the Renaissance polyphonic (many voices) style.<\/p>\n<p>And a leading figure in the English Court was Thomas Tallis. \u00a0\u00a0His works contain complexity and emotional depth. And his original voice makes a significant contribution to English choral music.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Musical Trends in the Renaissance Period<\/h2>\n<p>In contrast to the Medieval period, the Renaissance era saw more of a shift from sacred to secular music.<\/p>\n<p>And where the texture had been monophonic (one voice or part), it now became polyphonic (many voices).<\/p>\n<p>Harmony (chords) also became richer, with the use of thirds and sixths becoming more common.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Guitar Music in the Renaissance<\/h2>\n<p>The Renaissance period saw an evolution in instrument design and repertoire.<\/p>\n<p>Performers and composers held the vihuela and lute in high regard.
