The score\u2019s got our pencil marks all over it. There may be big circles around all the dynamics, and little pictures warning us of the tricky parts. It\u2019s all evidence of our progress along this rewarding journey.<\/p>\n<p>But we suspect deep down that to give our performance that extra polish, we should <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/memorize-music\/\">memorize our music<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"centerc\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1lDlrCo9qLY?rel=0&amp;modestbranding=1\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">So When Do We Need to Start Memorizing Our Pieces?<\/h2>\n<p>For some, it\u2019s quite a scary leap. It\u2019s comfortable playing from the \u2018dots\u2019, and it\u2019s a risk if we prise our eyes away from that music stand.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the professionals play whole concerts without a piece of sheet music in sight. They make it seem effortless.<\/p>\n<p>When do they start to commit all those notes to memory? Did it happen through repetition, or did they make a conscious effort?<\/p>\n<p>When should we start to memorize a piece?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When we reach a certain level of technical competence?<\/li>\n<li>When we can play the piece?<\/li>\n<li>Once we\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/polish-guitar-music-troubleshoot-tricky-spots\/\">mastered the difficult parts<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Or when we first begin to learn the piece?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Why Memorize?<\/h2>\n<p>We can assume it helps our performance if we memorize our music. But why?<\/p>\n<h3>Memorization Builds Our Ability to Visualize<\/h3>\n<p>Memorizing increases our <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/classical-guitar-visualization\/\">ability to visualize the music<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If we want to go to the store, we picture the route in our heads. If we want to play a note on our guitar, we form a mental picture of what we need to do, and then we do it.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a form of visualization. It\u2019s a powerful tool and it\u2019s used in various ways by different people.<\/p>\n<p>We could use it to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>See the notation like a photograph \u2013 even when it\u2019s not in front of us<\/li>\n<li>\u2018See\u2019 the sound of the music as an image, or a series of images, in our mind\u2019s eye. (Perhaps the music reminds us of a river or a stormy night. Or of people dancing.)<\/li>\n<li>See ourselves playing in a performance with confidence, grace, and poise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Memorization Builds Our Aural Ability<\/h3>\n<p>Memorization helps us to build an in-depth knowledge of how the music sounds.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hearing how the tune goes (in our heads)<\/li>\n<li>Listening out for patterns in the melody (like echoes, or repetitions)<\/li>\n<li>Listening to the harmonies in the chords (expected or unexpected?)<\/li>\n<li>Noticing<a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/musical-form\/\"> the structure of a piece<\/a> and where the phrases begin and end<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Memorization Builds Our Tactile Memory<\/h3>\n<p>Memorization helps us become familiar with the way the music feels under our fingers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The finger ballet of preparing and stretching toward the next note<\/li>\n<li>Necklaces of notes (fingers play one note at a time)<\/li>\n<li>Notes chunked together as blocks or chords (<a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/basics\">fingers move as a group<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">It\u2019s All part of Growing as a Musician<\/h2>\n<p>As we get better at this, we can visualize playing entire pieces. We can think about the shapes and the patterns. The chords, the volume, and the expression. It all happens mentally. And that\u2019s all part of growing as a musician.<\/p>\n<p>These things also happen automatically when we read a piece of music. As we work through it, we use our visual, aural, and tactile memories to guide us.<\/p>\n<p>So we may as well start memorizing it right away.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Memorize New Music Right Away<\/h2>\n<p>We will achieve faster results if we start memorizing as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The best time to start is as soon as we first set eyes on the music. We can learn a tiny chunk. A &#8220;C&#8221; chord. A couple of bars.<\/p>\n<p>If we memorize it, then we can <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/recall-memory\/\">use visualization to recall it<\/a>. Anywhere, at any time. We can recall it in the line at the grocery store. Or when we can\u2019t sleep at night.<\/p>\n<p>And when we visualize music from memory, it counts as practice.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Sooner You Do It, the Faster You Learn<\/h2>\n<p>In the same way as we practice playing music, we can practice memorizing music too. By practicing memorization, we achieve more focus and become more aware of what\u2019s going on in our heads.<\/p>\n<p>When we play from memory, it\u2019s very clear when our mind wanders off on its own agenda. (Did we send that email\/do that load of laundry?)<\/p>\n<p>This shows us that our minds are busy, and could lead us to think about ways we might improve our concentration. (Mindfulness is the go-to word here.)<\/p>\n<p>Memory lapses also show how solid our understanding is of that particular passage. We can use that input to go back and use another technique on the same passage. The more ways we think about it, the stronger our memory.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Decide To Memorize Your Next Piece<\/h2>\n<p>Go into your next piece with the determination to memorize it right from the start.\u00a0 (<a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/first-step-to-memorize-music\/\">Here&#8217;s the first step.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t mean we\u2019ll never look at the music again. There\u2019s still a huge amount we can do with the \u2018dots\u2019 in front of us.<\/p>\n<p>But by having memorized it already, we can do more detailed work with expression and musicality.<\/p>\n<p>So it doesn\u2019t matter whether we\u2019re a beginner or more advanced. We will all learn our pieces faster and more thoroughly when we\u00a0memorize the notes as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Fair warning: It might take extra time in the beginning, and it might pull us out of our comfort zone to start off with.
