It tells us how the music is organized on the page. These small sections help us keep our place as we play, and may also outline the pulse of the music. The section between barlines is called a measure, or bar.<\/p>\n<p>Each measure contains the same number of beats, which is notated by the time signature.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Time Signature in Music<\/h2>\n<p>What is a time signature? The time signature tells us how many beats are in each measure and <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/clap-count-rhythm\/\">what type of note is counted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing at the very beginning of a piece of music, it consists of two numbers, one above the other. This could be any number, but it is usually 3, 4, or 6.<\/p>\n<p>9 and 12 are also common in <a href=\"https:\/\/worldmusiccentral.org\/world-music-resources\/musician-biographies\/malian-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">African music<\/a>. But this could be any number.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom number tells us which type of note is counted.<\/p>\n<p>In the bottom number of the time signature,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 denotes a whole note.<\/li>\n<li>2 denotes a half note.<\/li>\n<li>4 denotes a quarter note.<\/li>\n<li>8 denotes an eighth note.<\/li>\n<li>We sometimes see 16 or 32. But not often.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The bottom number can only be one of these. That is because it refers to a specific note value. So we will never see, for example, a 5 on the bottom of the time signature.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Most Common Time Signatures<\/h2>\n<p>In western music, some time signatures or more popular than others.<\/p>\n<p>The most popular are 4\/4, 3\/4, and 6\/8. This sounds \u201cright\u201d to those of us who grew up listening to Western music. Other cultures have other norms and have become comfortable with other time signatures.<\/p>\n<p>When first learning to read music, we usually see the <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/8-common-rhythms\/\">more common ones<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Mixed Meter Music<\/h2>\n<p>The time signature may change within a piece of music.<\/p>\n<p>When this happens, we call it \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/play-mixed-meter-time-signatures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mixed meter<\/a>.\u201d The number of beats per measure may change for different sections of music.
