How to Practice Guitar with a Hurt Hand"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you have more going on in your life besides your guitar practice, you\u2019ll likely get sore hands or an injury at some point.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s from\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>too much scrolling on Pinterest<\/li>\n<li>too much typing on your laptop (my personal bane)<\/li>\n<li>rough-housing with the cat<\/li>\n<li>or simply opening a particularly stubborn jelly jar,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2026it\u2019s easy to strain or bruise the little muscles in your hands, or get minor wounds that take some time to heal.<\/p>\n<p>When your hands hurt, how do you practice guitar? You need to keep practicing, but you also need to give your hands time to heal. So how do you balance those opposing desires, and what do you actually do in guitar practice on those hurt-hand days?<\/p>\n<h3>Do you have chronic guitar injuries?<\/h3>\n<p>First off, if you&#8217;re perpetually getting guitar injuries in your practice, you may have a flaw in your technique. \u00a0If you use improper form or positioning, you can cause wear and tear on your connective tissues and strain your muscles (or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/focal-dystonia-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">something worse<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/classical-guitar-lessons-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Always be on the lookout for ways to improve your fundamental form<\/a>, positioning, and movements, and you&#8217;ll gain increasing comfort and safety in your practice. \u00a0But assuming you have a run-of-the-mill hurt hand&#8230;.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"practicewithahurthand:basicstrategy\" style=\"text-align: center;\">How to Practice with Guitar Injuries: Basic Strategy<\/h2>\n<p>In the most general sense, when you have a hurt hand, focus your practice time on the other one. If your right hand is hurting, focus on the left, and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p>If both hands are hurting, spend your time with more intellectual study and mental practice.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"restisjobone\">Rest is Job One<\/h3>\n<p>Perhaps the worst thing you can do is to just \u201cwork through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/guitar-finger-pain-sore-wrist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pain<\/a>\u201d. This notion was popularized by the sports field before they knew better. But now the best trainers recognize that it doesn\u2019t make sense to sacrifice the long term for some short term, low-stakes practice goal.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rest your hurt hand as much as possible.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Instead, your best course of action is to rest your hurt hand as much as possible. You can still come leaps and bounds in your practice time.<br \/>\nYou can focus your time on other areas of knowledge that support your playing.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Work on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/how-to-hold-a-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sitting Position<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; take the time to notice how your body weight distributes on your chair, how gravity affects different arm positions, or how comfortable or relaxed you can feel holding and touching your guitar (without actually playing)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Observe and Release Bodily Tension<\/strong> &#8211; take the time to play with releasing tension in different parts of your body while holding your guitar.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/music-theory-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Music Theory<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; connect more dots<\/li>\n<li><strong>History<\/strong> &#8211; read a biography or watch music documentaries<\/li>\n<li><strong>Listen<\/strong> &#8211; sit down and listen to the great classical masterpieces.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mental Practice<\/strong> &#8211; use visualization to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/musical-memory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">test your memory <\/a>or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/how-to-learn-classical-guitar-pieces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">learn new music<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Conduct Through Pieces<\/strong> &#8211; go through your pieces and sing them to yourself (or aloud) with the best phrasing you can muster. Wave your arms around and internalize the emotional core of the music. Experiment!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Learn New Guitar Skills<br \/>\n<\/strong>&#8211; Quiz yourself on your guitar knowledge<br \/>\n&#8211; ID note names on the fretboard<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>&#8211; Work on new techniques for non-hurt hand<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"isolateyourotherhand\">Isolate Your Other Hand<\/h3>\n<p>If you have one good hand, put all your attention and time into training it.
