{"id":1392,"date":"2014-12-05T10:57:01","date_gmt":"2014-12-05T18:57:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/classicalguitarshed.foureyes.com\/?p=1392"},"modified":"2022-08-02T04:06:51","modified_gmt":"2022-08-02T11:06:51","slug":"mertz-guitar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/mertz-guitar\/","title":{"rendered":"Mertz Guitar Piece: Maestoso (full lesson, with pdfs)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this Mertz guitar lesson, we take the plunge into Johann Kaspar Mertz&#8217;s &#8220;Maestoso&#8221;. \u00a0It&#8217;s a great little piece I ran across and fell in love with.<\/p>\n<p>Like many small pieces of this nature, we are faced with a choice: \u00a0Do we just hack through it on the way to some other piece? \u00a0Or do we bring our highest standards and aspirations to the table?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I am all about the latter. \u00a0There is no such thing as an &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/easy-pieces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">easy piece<\/a>&#8220;, if you truly show up to it, do the hard work and aspire to make it beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>The great thing about pieces like this (and approaching them this way) is that regardless of your level you can always find new challenges and opportunities to grow as a musician and guitarist. \u00a0Sure, it&#8217;s more work, but what else are you going to do? \u00a0Play pinochle?<\/p>\n<h2>Mertz Guitar Music<\/h2>\n<p>Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856) was a virtuoso guitarist and composer from Hungary who spent the last third of his life in Vienna.<\/p>\n<p>What I like about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/sm-mertz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mertz<\/a> is that his music seems to follow the Romantic* composers music of the day, like Chopin, Schumann and Brahms (if not quite to their level of mastery). \u00a0While no better or worse than other periods, it does give the music a bit more drama, which I love (in music, not in life!) \u00a0His wife was a concert pianist, and so he was deeply steeped in Romantic piano music, which probably influenced his writing as well.<\/p>\n<p>Just to put him in the timeline, he was born 25-30 years after Sor, Aguado, Giuliani and Carulli (and you can really hear the difference in their musics). \u00a0And was just a few years younger than Carcassi, who also left us some really nice Romantic guitar music. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/sm-js-bach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bach<\/a> died in 1750, Mozart in 1791, and Beethoven in 1826.<\/p>\n<p>*&#8221;Romantic&#8221; music refers to music from the Romantic Period (~1830-1900). \u00a0It was marked by music becoming more expressive, passionate, inventive, virtuosic, and expansive (longer pieces). \u00a0Music was less for the royal courts and church (as it was before) and more for concert halls and artistic expression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"centerc\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L-0F-AYigIA?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;autohide=1\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As with all pieces, go slow and take things one step at a time. \u00a0A wise man once said:\u00a0 Slow is Smooth and Smooth is Fast!<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"right\"><p><span style=\"font-size: 24pt;\">&#8220;Slow is Smooth and Smooth is Fast!&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So download the pdfs and\/or TABS below in the orange button and hop to it!<\/p>\n<address>(note: \u00a0I am providing TAB, but there really is no substitute for reading music. \u00a0You miss a ton of information using TAB. \u00a0That said, use the TAB if you need to.
