{"id":124637,"date":"2020-07-10T00:04:32","date_gmt":"2020-07-10T07:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/?page_id=124637"},"modified":"2021-09-03T03:38:00","modified_gmt":"2021-09-03T10:38:00","slug":"phrasing-techniques","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/a\/phrasing-techniques\/","title":{"rendered":"Musical Phrasing Techniques and Devices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A phrasing technique, or device, is a way to handle a common musical pattern.\u00a0 These patterns could be rhythmic, melodic, structural (based on the form) or something else.<\/p>\n<p>Each phrasing technique is in service of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/a\/phrasing-concepts\">Phrasing Concept<\/a>.\u00a0 These techniques are methods to achieve the goal of a larger concept.<\/p>\n<p>These are perhaps the most versatile and handy phrasing devices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/cross-bar-line\/\">Cross the Bar Line<\/a> &#8211; This simple practice habit will make everything you play sound more music.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/dynamics-phrasing-classical-guitar\/\">3 Dynamics Rules<\/a> &#8211; These three rules work 90% of the time, and make music beautiful. If you train yourself to default to this way of playing, you&#8217;ll be 90% of the way there.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/expressive-guitar-playing\/\">The &#8220;Long-Short&#8221; Pattern<\/a> &#8211; This pattern connects the bits in a piece of music, and makes them into longer lines.\u00a0 It makes music more naturally vocal-sounding, and &#8220;conversational&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/flow-momentum-phrasing-words\/\">How to Create Forward Momentum in Music<\/a> &#8211; This trick expands on the &#8220;Cross the Bar Line&#8221; from above.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a way to &#8220;pull&#8221; the listener forward.
