Get into the right headspace<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to be patient. &nbsp;This type of work takes time. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/7-classical-guitar-right-hand-mistakes\/\">Any attempts to hurry can undermine the integrity of your work, and ultimately make your learning take longer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is the number one rule for learning classical guitar? &nbsp;Be patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of the movements described below is like a fundamental building block of the way you move on the classical guitar. &nbsp;Relish each moment of digging deeper and deeper into the minute details of how you move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more awareness and patience you can bring to the table, the more you will enjoy all this, and the better you will play. Playing at a very high level, your awareness is razor-sharp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you want to play at a high level and be able to fully express everything you want to, start by getting into the habit of entering a state of heightened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/getting-in-the-zone-flow-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">awareness<\/a> (of the feelings of your fingers on the strings, your movements, the sound of every note, and anything else you can notice).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-2-what-exactly-are-arpeggios-anyway\"><b>2. What exactly are arpeggios anyway?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start at the very beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arpeggios are \u201cbroken chords\u201d. &nbsp;If you play any <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/chords\">chord<\/a> one note at a time, you have an arpeggio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In folk circles, this is referred to as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/fingerpicking-pattern-outside-in\/\">fingerpicking<\/a>&#8221; or &#8220;fingerstyle&#8221;.&nbsp; These fit naturally on the guitar because of how our right-hand fingers can easily play multiple strings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are much harder on bowed strings, woodwinds, and other instruments. &nbsp;(Don\u2019t get smug yet, though, because scales may be a bit easier on those instruments, so it\u2019s a give and take.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This video is a sort of \u201corientation\u201d to introduce you to playing arpeggios and give you some things to remember&nbsp;going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"centerc\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/08CcZzcMMN8?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;autohide=1\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For more on why to practice arpeggio patterns, and a deeper dive into my philosophies on playing arpeggios (the why and what), read this article on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/classical-guitar-technique-right-hand\/\">fundamentals of right-hand work.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-3-fundamental-movement-on-the-classical-guitar\"><strong>3. Fundamental movement on the classical guitar<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before getting to the meat and potatoes of how to play&nbsp;guitar arpeggios, it would be wise to brush up on the fundamentals of how you move and generally be on the classical guitar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"centerc\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e51Z-50GzDo?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;autohide=1\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can consider these your &#8220;ground rules&#8221;, and whenever any question or confusion comes up, you can go to these first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you know that you are good to go on the ground rules, then you can see if the problem is still there. \u00a0(Often it won&#8217;t be!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it&#8217;s always wonderful to\u00a0<a title=\"Fundamental Concepts of Classical Guitar Technique\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/basics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">review the basics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-4-know-what-to-avoid\"><strong>4. Getting the movements right: the Meat and Potatoes<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The core of this method of movement lies with six core \u201ccells\u201d, or &#8220;primary arpeggios\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By combining these six arpeggio patterns (with each other and with I &amp; M alternation), you can get just about any arpeggio technique you are likely to come across. So you can think of these six guitar arpeggios as the building blocks of your playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By practicing these with razor-sharp attention to every detail, you will create the abilities you need to play just about whatever you want, however you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take one of these at a time, preferably in the order they are listed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After you are comfortable with one or two, skip down to the section &#8220;Keeping arpeggio practice fun\u201d and start working on some left-hand patterns to spice up your practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the primary guitar arpeggios:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a title=\"PIM Arpeggio Pattern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/pim-arpeggio-pattern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arpeggio #1 &nbsp;PIM<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a title=\"PMI Arpeggio Pattern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/pmi-arpeggio-pattern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arpeggio #2 &nbsp;PMI<\/a> &nbsp; &nbsp;(Skip ahead to \u201cKeeping arpeggio practice fun\u201d, and add that to&nbsp;the mix!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a title=\"PMA Arpeggio Pattern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/pma-arpeggio-pattern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arpeggio #3 &nbsp;PMA<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a title=\"PAM Arpeggio Pattern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/pam-arpeggio-pattern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arpeggio #4 &nbsp;PAM<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a title=\"AMI Arpeggio Pattern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/ami-arpeggio-pattern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arpeggio #5 &nbsp;AMI<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a title=\"AIM Arpeggio Pattern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/aim-arpeggio-pattern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arpeggio #6 &nbsp;IMA<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other Common Patterns (that are combinations of the above guitar arpeggios)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a title=\"AMIM Arpeggio Pattern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/amim-arpeggio-pattern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arpeggio #7 &nbsp;AMIM<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/pima-arpeggio-pattern-classical-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arpeggio #8 &nbsp;PIMA<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/pimami-arpeggio-pattern-for-classical-guitar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arpeggio #9 PIMAMI<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a title=\"PAMI Arpeggio Pattern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/pami-arpeggio-pattern-tremolo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arpeggio #10 &nbsp;PAMI<\/a> (the tremolo!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/iama-arpeggio-pattern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arpeggio #11 &nbsp;IAMA<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-6-keeping-arpeggio-practice-fun\"><b>6. Keeping arpeggio practice fun<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With anything requiring repetition, we need to be able to stay engaged, stay motivated, and stay excited enough to practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without this, we end up moving our arpeggio technique practice to the back burner. &nbsp;We \u201cforget\u201d to practice them, and pretty soon, we are right back where we started. &nbsp;No fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the goal here is to make guitar arpeggios as rewarding and gratifying as anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to do it? &nbsp;Learn an easy left-hand pattern that allows your arpeggio playing to sound <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/aa-3pillars1\/\" target=\"_blank\">beautiful<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This Practice Progression turns your dry repetitions into a lovely etude. &nbsp;You can use this left-hand pattern with all the different guitar arpeggios patterns in your guitar practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dive-into-this-tutorial-on-adding-a-left-hand-practice-progression\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/arpeggio-practice\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dive into this tutorial on adding a left-hand practice progression.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-7-the-real-world-how-these-arpeggios-appear-in-music\"><b>7. What next? &nbsp;Ramping it up<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As you get comfortable with the primary arpeggio patterns and get some chord progressions that you enjoy practicing with, you may get antsy to move things forward. &nbsp;That\u2019s natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many directions to go from here, but I highly recommend <strong>returning often to the basics.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Very few things you do in your practice will move you ahead more than deepening your understanding and facility with the fundamentals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not joking here. &nbsp;That\u2019s why you often hear master players practicing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/slow-practice-classical-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">slow<\/a> scales, simple guitar arpeggios, and basic fundamentals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Many masters will also practice their fundamentals by <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/mute-guitar-quiet-practice\/\">muting the strings<\/a> and focusing on the proper movements.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-that-said-for-some-ideas-of-new-challenges-check-out-this-nbsp-video-nbsp-on-arpeggio-practice\"><strong>That said, for some ideas of new challenges, check out this<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/variation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&nbsp;video&nbsp;on arpeggio practice.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-9-reminders\"><b>9.
