{"id":1061,"date":"2014-08-15T20:58:51","date_gmt":"2014-08-16T03:58:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/classicalguitarshed.foureyes.com\/?p=1061"},"modified":"2025-01-02T22:59:24","modified_gmt":"2025-01-03T06:59:24","slug":"basics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/basics\/","title":{"rendered":"The Basics of Guitar Technique"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><\/h3>\n<p>In every craft there are a few primary &#8220;rules of thumb&#8221; that, when observed, help everything to progress much more smoothly. \u00a0Classical guitar is no different.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, you&#8217;ll learn some of the classical guitar technique fundamentals that create the groundwork for more rapid progress, more beautiful tone, and a more enjoyable experience. \u00a0You&#8217;ll also benefit by avoiding much of the pain, tension and frustration that can come with poor fundamental form.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"centerc\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e51Z-50GzDo?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;autohide=1\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>To effectively play at high-speed and with grace and precision, we have to be the human equivalent of a well-crafted Italian sports car, or a Swiss watch.<\/p>\n<p>The point is that we have to <!--more-->move consistently in a way that makes it so that we use the perfect amount of muscle directed in just the right place at just the right time to give us what we need. And we have to do all that without doing anything extra, that could slow us down or create wear and tear on our joints.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Complete Mastery of the Self<\/h2>\n<p>Of course this is a pretty tall order. What I am suggesting here is nothing less than complete mastery of <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalguitarshed.com\/how-to-hold-a-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our body and movements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, for myself, this is what I am after. Mastery and ease of motion are my overriding goals and long-term physical aspirations. \u00a0Musically, I just want to play beautifully.<\/p>\n<p>At whatever level you&#8217;re playing, I hope that you can adopt this goal as well.<\/p>\n<p>You may or may not believe that you will ever get there given the time and energy you have available for practice. Doesn&#8217;t matter. You can still work in a way that, given enough time and practice, will eventually get you there.<\/p>\n<p>After all, if you&#8217;re going to be practicing guitar anyway&#8230;..<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Creating Structure and Ground Rules<\/h2>\n<p>With any pursuit involving such intricacies and physical demands, it helps to have some &#8220;large structures&#8221; in place. These &#8220;structures&#8221; can be rules that govern everything else that we do. \u00a0A nice, tidy box to work in, if you will.<\/p>\n<p>I started by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/teach-yourself-learn-classical-guitar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teaching myself for many years<\/a>. \u00a0Then got a teacher and rebuilt my technique from the ground up. \u00a0Then realized I still wasn&#8217;t on the right track and started over from the beginning again. \u00a0Later, I started studying the Alexander Technique, and once again went back to square one. \u00a0It&#8217;s been a long, irksome road at times, but adopting a few ground rules has allowed my playing to continually grow.<\/p>\n<p>As with everything, it is a work in progress, and will probably always be. \u00a0But the more I spend time on <strong>fundamentals<\/strong>, the more convinced I am of their value.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cThe rule is: the basics are the basics and you can\u2019t beat the basics.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>\u2013 Charles Poliquin (world&#8217;s top strength coach)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Basic Concepts<\/h2>\n<p>What I would like to propose here are some basic concepts of classical guitar technique that can inform your guitar playing. They are basic reference points that you can reference whenever questions arise about guitar technique or movement. \u00a0They are standards to hold yourself to.<\/p>\n<p>Buying into these basic ideas can help you to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sidestep many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/pain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">potential problems<\/a>, confusions, and bad habits.<\/li>\n<li>Work in a way that ensures healthy joints and musculature.<\/li>\n<li>Create consistency and reliability in your playing,<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicalguitarshed.com\/how-to-learn-classical-guitar-pieces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learn and progress<\/a> faster.<\/li>\n<li>Develop more effective\u00a0habit formation.<\/li>\n<li>Create order in a disorderly world.
