Arrangements for Classical Guitar

An arrangement is a piece of music written for another instrument and then adapted to the guitar.

Many great guitarists and composers wrote arrangements of classical music favorites.

For example, Bach did not write for guitar, but we love to play him.  Likewise, the guitar favorite Asturias was actually written for piano.

Some composers are even better known for their guitar arrangements than for their original instruments.  Music sounds different on the guitar, and this suits some music better than others.

The original piece may come from orchestra, choir, piano, cello, or any other solo or ensemble.  These open up vast amounts of music for us to explore on classical guitar.

Below you’ll find guitar arrangements at all levels.  These include classical favorites, traditionals, folk songs, hymns, holiday music, and more.

Have fun!

Allen Mathews

Hi, I’m Allen Mathews.

I started as a folk guitarist, then fell in love with classical guitar in my 20’s. Despite a lot of practice and schooling, I still couldn’t get my music to flow well. I struggled with excess tension. My music sounded forced. And my hands and body were often sore. I got frustrated, and couldn’t see the way forward. Then, over the next decade, I studied with two other stellar teachers – one focused on the technical movements, and one on the musical (he was a concert pianist). In time, I came to discover a new set of formulas and movements. These brought new life and vitality to my practice. Now I help guitarists find more comfort and flow in their music, so they play more beautifully.
